Halloween is a night for family fun, costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating! As a homeowner, there are several things you need to do to prepare your home for a safe and festive Halloween.
Survey your Walkways.
Trick-or-treaters are usually too busy running towards the front door to pay attention to where they’re walking. To prevent any unwanted injuries, be sure to survey your walkways and yard for potential hazards like sprinklers, hoses, loose gravel, or wet leaves.
Install Additional Lighting.
Although a dimly lit entryway or walkway may create a spooky vibe for your visitors, it also increases the risk of an accident. Ensure the exterior lights of your home are working. If you have floodlights, consider turning those on as well. Consider installing additional lighting along your walkway. Even if you won’t be home, leave on lights to keep unwanted guests away. You may even want to install motion sensor lights.
Stay Away from Using Candles.
Jack-o-lanterns are a Halloween must-have, but try replacing a traditional candle with a battery-powered candle. Costumes, candy wrappers, and paper decorations can easily catch on fire. Avoid using candles as walkway lighting, as well.
Secure Railings.
Both children and adults rely on the security and support of railings when walking up stairs to your front door. Now is not the time to disregard your rickety railing. Now is the time to either get out your toolbox or call a professional to ensure your railing is sturdy.
Clean Out Your Garage.
There are many benefits to cleaning out your garage before Halloween. You can be sure your car is safe and secure from vandalism. The likelihood of a child being hit by a car is much higher on Halloween, so parking your car and trick-or-treating on foot is a much better idea. Besides, your garage probably needs to be cleaned out anyway.
Spruce Up Your Front Yard.
You want to have your yard looking fresh and put together for all your visitors, so at very least rake your front yard. If you want to go the extra mile, you may want to replace your dull summer plants with some new, vibrant fall plants.
Hang Decor.
Whether you choose to go all out or just hang a few lanterns, decorations are a great way to get your home ready for the festivities. Hang a simple fall wreath or place some painted pumpkins. If you really want to deck out your house, hang lights all around the exterior of your home or install a spooky goblin on your roof.
Tidy Up.
If you’ve been slacking on your home maintenance, here’s the push you needed to tidy up. When the leaves fall off your trees, your home’s exterior becomes exposed. These leaves have most likely found a new home in your gutters. You also may want to pressure wash your home or tidy up any dirty or chipped windows.
