Prep Your Home for Halloween

image asset 1

Halloween is a night for family fun, costumes, candy, and trick-or-treating! As a homeowner, there are several things you need to do to prepare your home for a safe and festive Halloween.

Survey your Walkways.

Trick-or-treaters are usually too busy running towards the front door to pay attention to where they’re walking. To prevent any unwanted injuries, be sure to survey your walkways and yard for potential hazards like sprinklers, hoses, loose gravel, or wet leaves.

Install Additional Lighting.

Although a dimly lit entryway or walkway may create a spooky vibe for your visitors, it also increases the risk of an accident. Ensure the exterior lights of your home are working. If you have floodlights, consider turning those on as well. Consider installing additional lighting along your walkway. Even if you won’t be home, leave on lights to keep unwanted guests away. You may even want to install motion sensor lights.

Stay Away from Using Candles.

Jack-o-lanterns are a Halloween must-have, but try replacing a traditional candle with a battery-powered candle. Costumes, candy wrappers, and paper decorations can easily catch on fire. Avoid using candles as walkway lighting, as well.

Secure Railings.

Both children and adults rely on the security and support of railings when walking up stairs to your front door. Now is not the time to disregard your rickety railing. Now is the time to either get out your toolbox or call a professional to ensure your railing is sturdy.

Clean Out Your Garage.

There are many benefits to cleaning out your garage before Halloween. You can be sure your car is safe and secure from vandalism. The likelihood of a child being hit by a car is much higher on Halloween, so parking your car and trick-or-treating on foot is a much better idea. Besides, your garage probably needs to be cleaned out anyway.

Spruce Up Your Front Yard.

You want to have your yard looking fresh and put together for all your visitors, so at very least rake your front yard. If you want to go the extra mile, you may want to replace your dull summer plants with some new, vibrant fall plants.

Hang Decor.

Whether you choose to go all out or just hang a few lanterns, decorations are a great way to get your home ready for the festivities. Hang a simple fall wreath or place some painted pumpkins. If you really want to deck out your house, hang lights all around the exterior of your home or install a spooky goblin on your roof.

Tidy Up.

If you’ve been slacking on your home maintenance, here’s the push you needed to tidy up. When the leaves fall off your trees, your home’s exterior becomes exposed. These leaves have most likely found a new home in your gutters. You also may want to pressure wash your home or tidy up any dirty or chipped windows.

If your to-do list just doesn’t have any room left on it, give One Man & A Toolbox a call. Whether it’s securing your railings, clearing your gutters, cleaning out your garage, or even hanging tricky Halloween decorations, we’d love to help. image asset

Maintaining a home definitely comes with many challenges. A challenge many households struggle with is staying neat and tidy because of lack of storage. However, adding storage doesn’t have to mean adding more square footage. Check out these tips to make the most out of your current space.

Odd-Shaped Closets.

Is that odd closet underneath your stairs currently an unorganized mess? Chances are you’re wasting valuable storage space. We understand these spaces can be intimidating and appear useless. By installing shelves and office organizers, you can completely transform your chaotic closet into gobs of storage space. The best part is you can shut the closet door and no one will even know its there.

Behind Closed Doors.

One of the easiest and least time-consuming ways to install additional storage is behind closet doors. Plus, there are so many options. Use a combination of hooks and bars to organize jewelry and accessories. Add a shoe rack to create more space in the bottom of your closet. Get creative and install containers to store smaller items in.

Extra Wall Space.

Embrace that random sliver of wall and turn it into a perfectly organized storage space. Adding shallow bins, organizers, or a bulletin board provide extra storage without taking up any floor space. This is also a great way to add your own personal touch to your walls. Look around your house for any small corners or narrow pathways that could use a stylish solution and double as additional storage.

Utilize Every Cabinet Size.

No matter what shape or size your cabinet may be, don’t allow any storage to go to waste. Equip your cabinets so you can utilize every inch of storage they offer. For tricky corner cabinets, we recommend multiple-layer lazy Susans. Deep cabinets work best with pull-out shelves or multiple baskets. For tall shelves, try stacking organizers.

Empty Kitchen Wall.

Whether your kitchen is big or small, there is most likely an empty wall calling your name. Make the most of that empty wall space by turning into the ultimate organizer. A great, and visually-appealing, way to add storage to your kitchen is by adding a pegboard. Hang all your kitchen supplies on your wall, allowing for easy access and additional decor

Below Base Cabinets.

Adding shallow drawers below your kitchen or bathroom cabinets is a smart and sneaky way to create more storage space in your home. Most people wouldn’t think to use those extra few inches, but this is the perfect area to store cookie sheets, towels, or items you don’t often find yourself reaching for. Make sure each drawer has a touch-latch so you can open them with just a tap of the toe.

Upgrade your Outdated Bathroom

image asset

Are you looking to give your bathroom a complete turnaround? Or do you just want to make a few quick updates? Either way, the process can be overwhelming. Many homeowners underestimate the number of visitors their bathroom actually receives. Plus, bathroom upgrades can have a great return on investment. Transforming a bathroom can be a pretty quick and inexpensive task if done right, but how do you know when your bathroom is due for an update? We’ve put together a list of signs it’s time to give your bathroom an upgrade.

Outdated colors.

Does the color of your bathroom remind you of the 70’s?  Funky colors are the most obvious sign that your bathroom is out of date. Get rid of those mint green and peach bathrooms. Gray, black and white palettes are not only trending but provide a timeless, modern look.

Old bathroom smell.

If you read this and immediately panicked, then it may be time to give your bathroom a renovation. Some bathrooms have a consistent old bathroom smell, no matter how often you clean. A few common fixes to rid of the smell is replacing your toilet’s wax seal or fixing a pesky sink leak. If your bathroom doesn’t have windows, consider adding better ventilation to create a fresher smell.

Unappealing lighting.

Creating the perfect bathroom lighting isn’t easy. Most times people find that the lighting is either too bright or not bright enough. Finding a happy medium between the two is the tricky part. Installing updated light fixtures and the appropriate light bulbs are a great start to updating your bathroom space.

Lack of storage.
